Drunk On Decay (San Francisco, 1998)

On this day (jan 29) in 1998, in San Francisco, the very last live rendition of Drunk On Decay was performed. Most every time the piece was done, the amplified tin funnel was hung from something bigger than the time before. This time it was a truck on a hoist. The next time was supposed to be a house lifted off its foundation. It hasn't happen yet, but it still could.

The Grinding Gig (Denver, 1993)

On Jan 23 1993 in Denver, two members of The Haters, each with a live mic in hand, stood on either side of a duel-wheel bench-grinder mounted on a small table in the middle of a club stage. Sparks were flying as their microphones were slowly pushed into the grinding wheels. A third member electrically manipulated the motor sounds from the grinder into an oscillation of thick distortion.

The Grinding Gig (1992) / Building Empty Holes (1993)

The first time The Grinding Gig was performed outside of Europe was Dec 1992 in New York, in a dark warehouse basement full of junk. The main source of lighting was the blank static from a TV set hung just above the performers. During the whole 25 minutes, a petrol-like fragrance poured out from the grinder’s motor. As the microphone was slowly pushed into the grinding wheel, it turned into a fine black powder which filled the air. Just two weeks later, with a screwdriver in hand, GX Jupitter-Larsen quietly removed 100 screws from the Coney Island Boardwalk. Staged during most of the day, this performance was another variation of Building Empty Holes.

Changing The Tire (1995)

New York June 1995: A young girl in a gown was wearing an auto tire over their shoulder like a sash. Using an electric drill mounted with a sanding wheel, GX Jupitter-Larsen was wearing away at this tire for 30 minutes. A third performer was processing the resulting sounds. The smell of rubber filled the small club. Polite applause followed.

Since 2009, a team of artists and technicians, in Graz Austria, have been constructing a nanosatellite for low earth orbit. Mursat1 is scheduled to launch in late summer 2012.

In addition to its normal functions, the satellite will implement a performance piece by GX Jupitter-Larsen. Entitled Orbit About The Polywave, Mursat1 will count its steps while in space.

Dec 29th 1991, New York: tattooist Matthew Jankowski used needles empty of any ink to tattoo the mathematical equation “0 + 0 = 0” on GX Jupitter-Larsen's left arm. This was the second time GX did this! The first “Tattoo of Nothing” was performed in Amsterdam in 1982.

The thin lines of blood left behind by the empty needles would slowly fade over a few days till the tattoos completely disappeared.

On the morning of June 28 2011, Gen Ken Montgomery took GX Jupitter-Larsen, amk, and Damion Romero to visit the Max Neuhaus sound installation at Times Square. The unmarked block of sound, located on a triangular pedestrian island at Broadway between 45th and 46th Streets, is a thick harmonic texture that hovers over a large underground vault covered by heavy grating. GX commented that the tone seemed to him like a sheet of ice that all other street sounds were skating on. An excerpt of GX’s field recording of Times Square is HERE .

Denver about the Polywave (1986 - 2011)

This is the first place I stayed when I first came to Denver in 1986. The Haters had been invited by Paul Dickerson and Mark Metz of We Never Sleep to perform at their Exotic Arts Fest. It was the first time a performance of mine ended in a full scale riot. It was also the first time I actually felt at home somewhere. So much so, in my heart of heart, I still think of Denver as my hometown.

Denver is where both I and my work came of age. The next two years there saw my most outrages performances ever staged anywhere. The building where I stayed in 1987 isn’t there any longer, but the apartment building where I lived in 88 with Paul and company remains.

In the early 90s, travelling back and forth between California and Europe I would stop off in Denver for months at a time. This noisy house was both a home and an arts space. The only time Jello Biafra ever attended a Haters performance, was in the basement of this house in 1992.

After 1994 I wasn't able to get back to Denver untill 2011. Here's the original Denver cast of The Haters at The 2011 Denver Noise Fest: Bob Ferbrache, GX Jupitter-Larsen (myself), and Paul Dickerson.

Celebrating entropy in Cleveland (1991)

Five members of The Haters cut, ripped, teared & slashed away at a chair, mattress, table, VCR, oversized highway pylon with flashing orange light, two sofas, three car seats, four car tires, and five motorcycle tires. They started slowly at first. Hacking away at the fabric for about ten minutes. Thereafter, many from the audience would join in on the celebration. Everything got smashed. The performance ended when one performer set off a rather large smoke-bomb.

Drunk on Decay in Cleveland (1997)

A funnel, attached to a motorcycle that three performers were balancing on a large wooden box, was allowed to drag and erode on a sandpaper turntable. Excerpt HERE!

Dirwyn in Cleveland (2001)

A 30 minute variation of the Dirwyn performance with the U.T.B. used for additional sounds. Sheer layers of harsh grating jarring with abrupt changes in frequency had people both figuratively and literally falling out of their chairs. Excerpt HERE!

Personal Radio: A Los Angeles perspective on radio art

“Personal Radio: A Los Angeles perspective on radio art” is a radio series I curated for Kunstradio on the ORF. It starts this weekend. Everyone knows much of America is wide open empty space. In much of the nation still to this day, the only sound you'll going to hear is not wildlife, but that of radio. That's if you happened to have a receiver handy in the first place.

Not everyone however, fully comprehends how, in America, a city can be empty without being a ghost town. Los Angeles is one such town.

Both bright and dusty, Los Angeles is a checkerboard of vacant lots and parking spaces. The city is dotted with both Vacancy and Keep Out signs. Empty maybe, but the void that is the Los Angeles landscape remains buzzing under a condensation of radio buzz.

Radio has had a long history of being that constant reassuring background hum in the pop culture context of America. In the age of webcasting and digital satellite transmissions however, analog over-the-air radio has increasingly become the domain for the outer fringes of special interest groups. The background static is still there, but the noise is often distance and alien to
many listeners.

Radio, like traffic noise, is often just more sound pollution to the average listener.

So what are artists to do in such a cultural context? What is radio art within such a place? How does one make radio meaningful where there is no community? How does the artist make radio personal?

In this series I've invited five Los Angeles based artists to help answer these questions. Each of them has had an extensive involvement in radio, either by actively broadcasting over the air, or by repurporting the medium in a larger artistic frame of reference.

The series starts with Joseph Hammer taking a look at how cultural identity is manifested by radio.

AMK makes radio his turntable. He takes radio and cuts it up into little pieces much like he does with his flexi records in order to play back a very different tune.

Can radio signals physically change the shape of your receiver? Maybe...
Damion Romero affects resonate physical space as the tactile edges of harmonic equilibrium are explored with raw noise and feedback.

Gil Kuno listens in on the local Hispanic community.

There are china dolls, and there are paper dolls. There are also radio dolls, according to Hollywood based toy designer Jessica King, who will be joining me in a collaboration for the final broadcast of this series.

The Untitled Title Belt (UTB) was based on the appearance of the traditional wrestling championship belt. This implement however, with its electronics installed inside the center plate, can function simultaneously as a microphone, distortion-pedal, & noise generator. GX Jupitter-Larsen has used the UTB in many of his live performances and most of his studio recordings since its premiere at a San Francisco show in 1999.

The Boston area & Holland (1999)

Oct 30, 1999 - The Boston area & Holland
Building empty holes to erect a noisy mess, two members of The Haters were performing at one city, while two others were performing at another. This was the first time The Haters performed in two different places at once.

Simultaneously at both the Boston & Dutch stagings of this intercontinental performance, The Haters used amplified electric drills to make sawdust out of wood. In the Boston segment the U.T.B. was used as an extra sound source, while in the Dutch half a third and forth member progressed the live sounds of the drilling. About 50 people were in attendance at both stagings. Outside before the Dutch event commenced, some computers were cast into four cement-mixers. The computers crushed themselves to pieces rolling about in the rotating barrels which acted as loud-speakers for the breaking.

Amplified Aerosol Discharging at The Hammer (2010)

13/5/2010 Los Angeles: GX Jupitter-Larsen and Gil Kuno amplified and treated the sound of an aerosol can being discharged. The image of the "Amplified Aerosol Discharging" was projected behind the performers to deliver the audiovisual articulations of erosion and entropy. When the small can emptied, it was quickly replaced with a large amplified fire extinguisher. Staged at the Armand Hammer Museum of Art, this premier last 17 minutes. It was GX's 350th performance.

Galactic Hits is a new CD put together to complement the music and science fiction exhibition at Maison d'Ailleurs. Compiled from an open call for submissions, the CD features a wide-range of well-known artists including synth-pop legend Jean-Jacques Perrey, noise pioneer GX Jupitter-Larsen, key figures in electronic music such as Staalplaat Soundsystem and Scanner, surf-rockers the Nematoads and a host of other auditory delights.

Graz, Oct 8 2009, Greg Leyh and The Haters reunited for a reenactment of their 1993 Ion-Gun performance. The new ion-gun had an improved transformer and driver assembly that charged the largely unsuspecting audience to over fifty thousand volts. In 1993 the American audience in San Francisco was pretty competitive with one another in seeing who could get the biggest charge in order to dish out the biggest shock. The 2009 Austrian audience, with a stronger sense of community, seemed much more curious in coming up with different ways to make the ion-gun a shared experience. Most people this time were using different body parts to see how the shock would be effected. This lead to people, mainly females, kissing directly under the ion-gun.

In 1993, the decoy performance on stage was seven members of The Haters watching blank static on a TV while slowly cutting up large pieces of cardboard. This time, the decoy was GX Jupitter-Larsen and Jessica King together grabbing onto the same live microphone and pushing it into sandpaper. An old guy was seen running around yelling about the noise scaring away the devil inside him.

Originally released on LP by SILENT RECORDS in 1986, this digipak CD edition has been remastered by Warn Defever from the original master reels, and includes the full COMPLETE ALBUM as two of the tracks had to be shortened to fit on the original LP issue. “Back during my Bachelor of Fine Arts, one of my fellow students was a woman who was eventually obsessed with the idea, systems, and eventual remnants of ‘process’. One of her key pieces involved hundreds of raw eggs which she carefully emptied, cracked open, and systematically peeled the delicate membranes from inside of the eggs. She carefully laid out the hundreds of membranes as they assembled in a giant area to the side of the studio. I swear that she didn’t even have some grandiose idea for the membranes as the peeling and assemblage system(s) evolved into something that was simply beyond any eventuality and initial idea for the piling skins of the eviscerated eggs. The deconstruction and conception behind the act of pulling apart the eggs into a vast collection of grimy, translucent membrane piles suggested something so much more than even a final constructed piece. Watching her as she realized that the true crux behind the piece was the process alone was astounding as the membranes were laid to rest to represent an almost sudden and powerful eventuality that acted as a piled testament to ‘process’. The harsh sound works of THE HATERS over artist GX Jupitter-Larsen’s long and established career also powerfully bring to mind the idea of process. Most of THE HATERS’ works are ideologies behind something being destroyed or manipulated; the amplified and sometimes distorted sounds of the processes representing a document that exemplifies the acts carried out upon the objects, machines, or otherwise. The act of recording the processes alone is evidence of an eventuality (to possibly be edited further) in the form of a possible final piece of vinyl, cassette, or CD, but the tendencies of THE HATERS’ material also intend the listener to experience the process of the audio lines as they were primarily constructed in the recording area. There is no doubt that GX appreciates the totemic quality of his personal objects’ physical aftermath, that is sometimes documented with video or photographs, but the powerful beauty of a THE HATERS audio piece is the experience for the listener that acts ALSO as a final document of sound that represent clearly the certain idea and sometimes violent act.
THE HATERS’ celebrated early work “In the Shade of Fire” acts a document collection for the listener that also reflects THE HATERS strong textural aesthetic through object manipulation and recording that defines GX’s place in the world of ‘harsh noise’. Listening your way through the material is a studied and defined testament to different representational fragments of heavy sound and source manipulation. The tracks Glsam and Diti are explosive introductory and side concluding / framing pieces that highlight and pronounce the breaking and crashing down of material, all gelled with bass driven strikes whose trails deteriorate into hints of cascading dirty and dark ‘Americanoise’ distortion. Bebas powers through a heavier dynamic with conscious falling apart of source material, but in abstracted waves that suggest the material being rebuilt just to simply fall and crash apart again with a sense of powerful futility. Thuch enhances the textural elements of the explosions and crashing as the sharpness of the strikes are slightly ‘rounded’ at the edges to expose an almost ‘gurgling’ texture that moves and slaps with vicious perplexity. Taisic represents a very early ‘Americanoise’ study of hiss manipulation that is accented with minimalist scraping that bring to mind the force of process on top of the white noise line. Cassas is the album’s meditated example of sharp shot-driven violence; articulated and seemingly layered for optimum cutting and breaking which bring forth sound dynamism from very physical deterioration. Fire 5 is an amazing example of a highly textural ‘wall’ of sound that, to the contemporary fan of gritty and dirty crunch waves, is a primary early example of powerful crackle lines that focus on the inner dynamism of the sound itself. All of the material discussed above is made up of elements of physicality and process, but the tracks Iny 1 and Iny 2 act, for the listener, as the ‘notes’ for the ideology of process and falling apart as they act as a more minimal, subtle, and exacting study of the scraping, scuffing, and hands on work of the artist as he manipulates the deteriorating materials. In essence, Iny 2 is an amazing concluding track that reminds the listener of the core focus and ideology behind THE HATERS’ exemplification of grating sound via concept driven manipulation of tangible sources, the process, the aftermath, and the eventual recording that reflects all of the above sound qualities.”
