Dec 2, 2012 - Performing by thinking about performing was one of the themes of this final performance of the Schimpfluch Carnival. GX Jupitter-Larsen, Joke Lanz, Rudolf Eb.er, and Mike Dando were sitting on stage amplifying brainwaves. They used wireless electroencephalographic sensors that contented to laptops off stage. A sonfication patch, developed by Mick Grierson, translated the data stream to an audio signal. Rashad Becker mixed this signal into a wide spectrum of beeps, blasts, and blares that beset the bedazzled audience. Rudolf entitled the performance "Wellenfeld" in honor of Urs Schwaller. Richard Whitelaw was the performance coordinator. Hear an excerpt HERE .

Weltmaschine
This mechanical siren screams to life with 25 electric motors. Gsellmann's Weltmaschine seems to be getting louder with age. Hear it: HERE
GX Jupitter-Larsen with Maria Gsellmann, Franz Gsellmann's daughter-in-law, who continues to maintain and give tours of the Weltmaschine.

Heckler (1999)

GX Jupitter-Larsen's favorite heckler was one he encountered in San Jose on June 25 1999. An anonymous young man emerged from the audience wearing a hand-drawn t-shirt depicting, among other things, a caricature of GX. He proceed to march up and down, yelling into a funnel all the reasons he hated The Haters. After a few minutes he just walked out of the gallery without any further clarification to the matter. Well done sir...!!! Whoever you are...

Sandpaper Dress (2004)
On June 5 2004 in Los Angeles, an amplified tin funnel was rubbing off against a sandpaper dress being worn by Jessica King. GX Jupitter-Larsen pressed the funnel harder and harder against the dress, pushing Jessica down. Bent out of shape, when Jessica finally fell to the floor, the 14 minute performance was over.

Dirwyn (Bremen, 2002)
On April 25 2002, in Bremen Germany, GX Jupitter-Larsen did an 18 minute variation of the “Dirwyn” performance with his noise belt (the U.T.B.) used for additional sounds. The roar-like buzz led to some long hard throbbing. Hear a short excerpt of the noise HERE !

On April 21 2002 in Paris, GX Jupitter-Larsen pushed an amplified calculator into a small electric fan. Hear a short excerpt of the noise HERE !Friday, April 20, 2012
Mind The Gap (Northampton, 1996)

On April 20 1996 in Northampton MA, GX Jupitter-Larsen used a staple-gun to break and shatter a stack of 91 LP records. Placed on a small table, the records had been bolted together. The longer the stapling went on, the shorter the stack got. Staples and cracked vinyl sprayed everywhere. The staple-gun was mounted with two contact-mics. Hear a short excerpt of the resulting distortion HERE !

The Grinding Gig (San Francisco, 1998)
On April 18 1998 in San Francisco, The Haters did The Ginding Gig at the Purple Onion. It was the very stage that Phyllis Diller and Tiny Tim made famous back in the 1960s. Two performers each had an electric drill mounted with a grinding wheel. They both pushed the spinning grinders into a live microphone being held up by a third performer. The mic was slowly worn down to a stub.

Dirt (San Francisco, 1991)
On April 15 1991 in San Francisco dirt was flying! While one member of The Haters used an amplified shovel to dig dirt from a wheelbarrow to a large shallow box, another member used an unamplified shovel to dig dirt from the same box back to the wheelbarrow. Collaterally, two other members tore paper. Throwing the pieces over the two that were digging. Off to one side, a fifth member did a live mix of the amplified shovel with pre-recorded sounds of fire, glass smashing, auto crashes, and explosions. During this ten minute performance, the audience quickly became inspired to an enraptured silliness. Running amok while covering most of the club in a thin layer of dirt and torn bits of paper.
The 50th performance (1987)

Out of the archives is this excerpt of a live recording of The Haters 50th performance. It took place at Cafe de Plak in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, April 15th 1987. While the pre-recorded sounds of auto-crashes were being amplified for 24 minutes, GX Jupitter-Larsen & Frans De Waard performed by tearing paper, breaking wood and shattering glass: HERE !

Flying Vinyl (1986)
On April 12 1986, the original ATA space, on 7th Street in San Francisco's South of Market area, was dressed up as your typical living room. Four members of The Haters took turns damaging phonograph records and then playing them on your typical home stereo set. After having been played for a bit, each record would then be hurled into the audience. After awhile, people started throwing the records back at the performers. The flying vinyl lasted 25 minutes. Listen to a brief excerpt HERE

Ishittal (1987)
On April 11, way back in 1987, in Den Bosch in The Netherlands, four members of The Haters sat with their backs to the gallery audience, watching blank static on an analog TV set. When one watches an analog TV broadcast, one is really watching the distance that the broadcast had to travel in order to reach the set. But with the unorchestrated static of an empty analog TV channel there is no effect of distance. This blank static has such a physical presence that it functions as a hole in the very condition that is the nature of distance itself.

Building Empty Holes (San Francisco, 1992)
On March 27, 1992, four members of The Haters each used a clici-clic to pop holes through numerous sheets of tinfoil & paper. For 20 minutes, the sound of the crushing was amplified into an ear-piercing blob of noise galore. Projected onto a large screen just behind the performers, a 1961 black & white film of assorted hooded wrestlers involved in various matches.Friday, March 9, 2012
Counting Dirt (Austin, 1991)
In Austin, on March 9 1991, GX Jupitter-Larsen performed by counting, one by one, the number of soil particles in the dirt covered floor of a gallery elevator. During the 4 hours of this untitled live-insulation, a total of 30,142 soil particles were counted (later estimated to be 10% of the total amount there).

Audiothecary (Phoenix, 2003)
On Feb 22 2003 a question was asked in Phoenix. Just what is the psychical weight of sound? The answer to this question probably has little to do with measurement. In “Audiothecary”, amplified balance scales are used as a performance-based utility for finding the weight of sound. The scales’ beam with both of its two pans at either end were all wired to function as one large microphone. Any slight touch, even breathing on them, would produce a very substantial noise.

Oaktown Wrestling Association (2003)
On Feb 21 2003, GX Jupitter-Larsen appeared as a heel manager during the inaugural matches of the Oaktown Wrestling Association. Wearing a Gorgeous George wig, GX then did what any wrestling manager would have done after escorting the top contender, War Chief, to the ring for his Hardcore match with Ice Box. He yelled out words of encouragement to his man, slapped his hands on the mat, tried to distract the referee whenever possible and clashed with the face manager around the ring. He did whatever it took to make the screaming crowd scream just that little bit more. The two gigantic super-heavy-weights in the ring gave a lofty performance! It was a first-rate match by anyone’s account. However, despite GX’s best effort, The War Chief lost to Ice Box. It was a classic metal folding chair to the head, followed by a big belly flop off the top rope. GX helped the hurt War Chief back to the dressing room, only to bring him back out a few matches later for a 15-Man Battle Royal for the OWA Championship Belt.
Again, GX gave his all for his man. The War Chief however was ganged up on by three other men and was thrown out of the ring; giving way for Ice Box to ultimately take the title.

Building Empty Holes (San Francisco, 1995)

On Feb 10 1995 in San Francisco, the amplified shrieking resonance of electric drills and feedback filled the venue as five performers drilled holes into a very large wooden pallet. The pallet was being held upright by the performers as they drilled into it again and again for 22 minutes. Sawdust and applause were all over the place.

Mind The Gap (San Francisco, 1996)
On Feb 7 1996 in San Francisco, GX Jupitter-Larsen & The Haters used amplified staple-guns to break and shatter a stack of LPs. The longer the stapling went on, the shorter the stack got. Staples and cracked bits of vinyl were spraying all about; hitting many in the audience. This was the first ever “Mind The Gap” performance.

Drunk On Decay (San Francisco, 1998)
On this day (jan 29) in 1998, in San Francisco, the very last live rendition of Drunk On Decay was performed. Most every time the piece was done, the amplified tin funnel was hung from something bigger than the time before. This time it was a truck on a hoist. The next time was supposed to be a house lifted off its foundation. It hasn't happen yet, but it still could.

The Grinding Gig (Denver, 1993)

On Jan 23 1993 in Denver, two members of The Haters, each with a live mic in hand, stood on either side of a duel-wheel bench-grinder mounted on a small table in the middle of a club stage. Sparks were flying as their microphones were slowly pushed into the grinding wheels. A third member electrically manipulated the motor sounds from the grinder into an oscillation of thick distortion.
