Totimorphous Ubiety Guide (TUG)

The Haters 37th Anniversary Show was also the premiere of the Totimorphous Ubiety Guide (TUG). Designed & built by GX Jupitter-Larsen, this hand-held analog device requires two people to operate. While GX handled the controls, Jessica King pulled & pushed on the machine’s rigid spring. Each tug affecting the sound produced with the result being a slow pulse. There’s never any question of location with this divining rod for conclusions.

Longhorn Speedway (1997)

"I’ve always relished the low-fidelity of a race track’s PA. There’s simply no other effects-pedal that gives one the same distortion as a speedway’s sound-system. On March 19 1997, I got access to the Longhorn Speedway in Austin for a few days leading up to a show by Survival Research Labs. I wanted to experience what it would be like to hear one’s favourite sounds transformed through such a device. Keeping to the motif, I started with playing car crash sounds over the race track’s PA. I blew the whole sound-system in about a hour. It took all afternoon the next day to fix the amp, and re-wire all the horns around the oval. On the third day I was soon to find out that no matter which one of my favourite sounds I put through the PA, it would always end up sounding just like a car crash in progress..."

Amplified calculators on sandpaper (2004)

19/3/2004 Seattle: Original cast members Colin Upton, Ken Gerberick, and Fraser Hall joined GX Jupitter-Larsen sitting around a small amplified card table. Each rubbed a bright pink calculator against some very harsh sandpaper. Pink dust literally poured off the sides of the tiny table as a thin pink haze hovered over the performers. The Untitled Title Belt was used as an extra sound source. The resulting vibrations were an abrasive severity that seemed to make everyone in the gallery severely happy. This 25 minute performance ended when one of the performers used a crowbar to smash up the table. Entitled “The Haters 25th Anniversary Show.”

Transexpansion Numeral Units

The transexpansion numeral unit (TNU) was invented in 1985 by GX Jupitter-Larsen to explore the distance & separateness in between linear counting locations that don’t neighbour each other. When arranged in order, the TNUs form a spiral around the standard linear numbers. If one assumes that each individual linear number is a particular location along a counting order, then each individual TNU would be the distance between two selected linear number locations. Where the TNUs have been placed is unimportant. What is important is that anyone can make up their own personal numbers to symbolize any numeral interrelationship that Jupitter-Larsen’s don’t. GX Jupitter-Larsen was operating his amplified balance scales, while AMK & Geoffrey Brandin played their anti-records and flexi-montages on modified turntables. If sound could have a psychical weight, it would be measured in units of noise.

Noise by flashlight ...for Dirk Bell (Oct 7, 2010)

Oct 7, 2010, Gateshead - GX Jupitter-Larsen and Jessica King sat across from each other. Grabbing the same flashlight, they pushed it against an amplified suitcase. This performance was done in conjunction with the opening for Dirk Bell's light-installation at the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.
